It is that time of year when we start to see some amazing young men and women begin their journey to attend school in the USA for a semester or two. After the year that just passed, all of the exchange programs were impacted, and many students whose dream to participate in this program were extinguished due to COVID. This year, we hope things will be different, and I am seeing many students from all over the world hoping to make 2021/2022 their year.
The one thing that is missing for these students to make their dream a reality is a host family. As some of you know, I work with the International Student Exchange to place students with families that want to open their hearts (and homes) to a student from another country.
Our program is monitored by the Department of State, and requires any host family to pass background and reference checks, as well as commit to the support of their student for the period they live with them (e.g. a bed, a room, meals, etc.). Our students have their own health insurance, and stipends for their expenses while they are here (e.g. travel, social activities, etc.). Our families are not paid, however we do provide the option to claim a tax deduction for the time your student lives with you.
Our program is open to all families, including single-people and same-sex families, as long as you meet the requirements established by the Department of State.
